Join hands with us to patron our Artists-In-Residence, gearing towards their first ever Kamatipura Art Festival!!
As part of preparation for Kamathipura Kala Mela next year, we wanted the Sakhis - Those who have spent significnt time with us in the past 3 years, to open up about thier childhood stories, which we will collectively develop as the first part of their performance script.
Owing to severe violence and trafficking faced by them, we chose Nature, conservation, and collective strength as themes to open them up about their collective identity as Sakhis.
Mangroves were the perfect metaphor/medium through which they were able to recognize their connections, that was beautifully facilitated by Neethu. Like the Mangrove roots that come back up from the ground, make a new earth through their strong connections, the Sakhis were absolultely entralled with the Outing and nature and theatre, and enjoyed and shared all their perspectives with us through the day.
End of the day we unwinded at the beach together, more stronger and determined than ever to preserve our unity, self and nature.
We started the day with breakfast and favorite songs playing in the bus, with dance and chatter. We also drove through the newly constructed Atal Sethu bridge that the Sakhis were excited about!
When we reached the Mangrove site, we were greeted with a huge expanse of Mangroves, and Neethu gave a lovely presentation about the trees. We did a nature walk, identifying tree names. We quited down to listen and respond to bird calls and nature.
We started our theatre exercises with Fluid images of trees in our childhood, facing the elements like wind, water- and we participated in team theatre exercises that brought us closer together.
We later had deeper conversations and induction of Sakhis, mutual introductions and Mangrove games that enabled them to work as a team.
After lunch, we sat together in a Gazebo amidst bird calls- and each Sakhi narrated her childhood memories with nature. Most of it were stories of abuse and trauma, but it was sprinkled with beautiful moments of childhood innocence and laughter.
We wound down the heavy session with a visit to the beach, and enjoyed our ride home with more songs and bittersweet good byes.
Like Mangroves, we had locked roots.
